Lake Irene and Holzwarth Historic Site

Today we decided to give the littles a break from all the driving, opting to stay on the west side of the park. Our first stop was Lake Irene. It was an easy hike for Big Sister, who has been a bit worn out from all the traveling. She's been on the lookout for a tree that she's bigger than, and she finally found one on the way to the lake. At the end of the hike we stopped for a snack break, and a bird tried to steal Big Sister's cashews! She jumped up super fast to save her precious snack, and for good measure she gave the poor bird a little growl to keep her from coming back to try again!

We met a park ranger on the trail who suggested we check out the Holzwarth Historic Site. It's the Homestead site of a family that started one of the first hunting and fishing lodges in the area. We were able to tour the old farm house with another family with young kids. At the end of the tour they had some dress up pioneer clothes that Big Sister (and Daddy) tried on.

After a quick lunch back at the motorhome, we spent some time on the Colorado River, which runs right past our campground.

Tomorrow we plan to get an early start and explore Bear Lake Road on the east side of the park.
